Your first long EV road trip in India — checklist

A practical checklist for the first highway day in an Indian EV: start SOC, backups, Wh/km, and how to use EV Grids so stop spacing matches your pack.

Before you leave

Start at 85–95% SOC if you can. Set your vehicle preset on EV Grids so connector type and Wh/km match your car.

Enable Prefer lower-cost if you have operator preferences, or set a max ₹/kWh cap to skip pricier networks when known.

Pick a backup charger at every stop — the planner shows primary + backups; tap one on the map if the recommended site looks busy.

On the highway

Watch green / amber / red reliability badges on stop cards — amber means limited reviews or busy now; red means avoid if you can.

If Google reports live gun counts, prefer stations with free connectors. A single 50 kW gun on a holiday weekend is a queue risk.

Use Trip mode → Fewer stops if you are comfortable charging to 90%, or Fastest if you want 150 kW+ DC only.

Plan a sample trip

Try a corridor you know — Hyderabad → Bangalore or Delhi → Jaipur — with Plan now on the route guide, then adjust Wh/km to your real consumption.

What ‘ready’ actually means

A first highway EV trip fails for boring reasons: you left at 62% SOC, you trusted ARAI kilometres, you queued at a single 50 kW gun on a Saturday, or you had no operator app logged in. The checklist above is the minimum. Add a printed or PDF itinerary, a 10-metre cable if you might use destination AC, and a co-driver who knows which backup you picked.

Calibrate Wh/km on a familiar 80–120 km dual-carriageway before the big day. If that loop used 18 kWh, you already know more than a brochure. Type that efficiency into EV Grids. Then plan a corridor you have driven on petrol — Hyderabad → Bangalore or Delhi → Jaipur — not an unknown ghat.

Pack like a petrol trip plus charging friction: RFID or UPI that works offline, a phone mount, and the expectation that one stop will be slower than the card suggested. If that prospect ruins the holiday, you are not ready yet — do a 200 km day first.

After you arrive

Compare the planner’s arrival SOC with the car. If you arrived 12% lower, raise Wh/km or reserve before the return leg. Share that note with whoever else drives the car. A first trip is a measurement exercise as much as a holiday.

Pick the right first route

The best first long EV drive is one you already know in a petrol car, on a corridor where charging is dense enough that a failure is inconvenient rather than serious. Bangalore to Mysore, Mumbai to Pune, Delhi to Agra, Hyderabad to Vijayawada and Delhi to Chandigarh all qualify: short enough that a longer-range preset may not need to charge at all, and busy enough that alternatives exist when one site is occupied.

Deliberately avoid a ghat descent, a monsoon weekend, and a 600 km day for the first attempt. Each of those adds a variable you cannot yet calibrate, and stacking all three is how people conclude that EV road trips do not work.

Calibrate on the way home

The point of a first trip is a number: your real Wh/km. Note the state of charge and odometer when you leave, and again when you arrive. Compare the arrival percentage the planner predicted with what the car showed. If you consistently arrive lower than predicted, raise your Wh/km rather than lowering your reserve.

Two calibrated trips are worth more than a dozen forum opinions about brochure range. After that, the planner's spacing starts matching your car instead of a preset average.
