How DC charging actually works on NH corridors — connectors, power, queues, apps, and how to use EV Grids so you are not gambling on a single gun.

Highway charging in India is no longer a novelty, but it is still not a petrol pump. Sites are uneven, a “60 kW station” may have one working CCS2 gun, and the tariff on the pole can differ from last month’s WhatsApp forward. This guide is the practical layer: what to know before you plug in, and how EV Grids uses that reality when it ranks stops.

AC vs DC on a road trip

Type 2 AC (often 7–22 kW) is for overnight or a long lunch when you are already at a hotel or mall. It is the wrong primary plan for a 500 km day unless you enjoy waiting. CCS2 DC is the highway standard: 30–60 minutes for a useful increment on most Indian packs, faster on 800 V cars (Ioniq 5, EV6) when the station can actually deliver high power.

EV Grids trip plans bias toward DC along the route. AC sites can still appear as context; do not treat them as equivalent to a 120 kW plaza charger. Filter minimum kW in the planner if you refuse slow DC.

kW is a ceiling, not a promise

Station power is the hardware maximum shared across guns, limited by the car’s onboard acceptance, state of charge, and thermal limits. A Nexon EV that accepted 50 kW at 20% SOC may crawl at 25 kW above 80%. That is why charging to 100% at a DC stall is usually a poor use of a scarce gun — charge to the next-leg need, then move. Overnight mode on EV Grids is the exception: you may want a high SOC before a ghat or a sparse stretch at dawn.

Connectors and vehicle presets

Schematic, not to scale. CCS2 is a Type 2 head with two large DC pins beneath it — which is why a CCS2 car can use a Type 2 AC cable, but a Type 2-only socket cannot deliver DC fast charging.

Pick the preset for your exact variant when you can (Nexon 45 kWh vs older 30 kWh, Harrier 65 vs 75 kWh). Presets set connector filters and a default Wh/km. CCS2-only cars should not waste a stop on CHAdeMO-only hardware. Tesla planning in India still means CCS adapters or CCS-native inlets depending on the car — verify your inlet, then filter. Networks you will actually see

Tata Power EZ Charge, Jio-BP Pulse, Statiq, ChargeZone, Zeon, Fortum (legacy), and state-linked plaza chargers dominate NH44, NH48, NH16, and NH65. Memberships can shave ₹/kWh; they do not reserve a gun. Enable Prefer lower-cost if you care about tariff ranking, then still read the live price in the operator app before you start the session. Queues, etiquette, and backups

Long weekends on Delhi–Jaipur, Mumbai–Pune, and Hyderabad–Bangalore fill single-gun sites. Charge only what the next leg needs; unplug when you hit your target; do not occupy a DC bay for a 40-minute dinner if the car is already at 85%. If Google reports live connector counts, EV Grids can flag “busy now.” That signal is incomplete — many Indian sites do not publish occupancy — so always select a backup charger at every stop. Apps you still need

EV Grids does not start the charge. Keep the operator app (or RFID) ready, plus a payment method that works offline if the plaza Wi-Fi is down. If a site is dark on arrival, do not sit on the highway shoulder waiting for a miracle — navigate to the backup waypoint you already selected.

Frequently asked questions

What connector do most Indian highway EVs use?
CCS2 for DC fast charging is the default on Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai, Kia, MG, BYD, and most recent models. Type 2 is AC (slower). Older imports may still use CHAdeMO — filter the planner to match your inlet.
Is a 50 kW charger enough on a long trip?
Yes for a meal-length stop on a 40–50 kWh pack. On 70 kWh+ packs or tight schedules, prefer 100 kW+ sites when the map shows them. Session time also depends on how full the battery already is — DC slows above ~80%.
Which charging network should I use?
