Why you need a backup charger at every stop

A primary charger can be closed, busy, or the wrong connector. EV Grids ranks backups for a reason — and checks your full trip chain when you swap picks.

Primary vs backup

Each stop shows a recommended charger plus 2–3 backups nearby. Open Google Maps with your final picks — the app uses your selected chargers as waypoints.

If a cheaper station is too far for your battery, you will see a reachability warning and a suggested Fix trip alternative.

Full trip check

When you change a stop, EV Grids re-checks later legs. If stop 2 breaks stop 3, a banner offers Fix trip — use it instead of hoping you will make it.

Why chain checks exist

A cheaper charger 14 km off-route may be reachable from stop 1 and still leave you unable to reach stop 3. EV Grids re-walks energy when you change a pick. If the banner says a later stop may not be reachable, that is not decoration — tap Fix trip or pick a closer backup.

On long weekends, the correct backup is often the next plaza with two guns, not a romantic hotel charger in a side town. Side towns add time, and time is SOC if AC is on.

Practice the swap at home

Before a real trip, plan a corridor and tap a backup on the map once so you know how the UI feels. Standing in the rain at a dark CCS2 is a bad moment to learn. Save or share the itinerary so both phones show the same waypoints.

What a backup is actually protecting you from

Not one failure mode but several: every gun occupied with a queue ahead of you, the CCS2 bay broken while the AC one works, the site gated or under renovation, a payment or RFID failure, or a plaza on the opposite carriageway with no legal U-turn for several kilometres.

None of these are visible in advance from a listing. A backup selected before you leave the previous stop converts all of them from a crisis into a minor detour you already planned.

Why swapping a stop re-checks the whole trip

Charging stops are a chain, not a list. If you replace stop two with a cheaper site 40 km farther along, you arrive at stop three with less in the battery — and it may no longer be reachable above reserve. EV Grids re-validates the later legs when you change one, which is why a fix is sometimes offered after an apparently harmless swap.

The practical habit: change a stop, then look at the arrival percentages downstream rather than just the one you edited.
