People ask “how much will Hyderabad to Bangalore cost in an EV?” as if there were one answer. There isn’t. A 45 kWh Nexon at 180 Wh/km on ₹28/kWh plaza DC is a different bill from a 75 kWh Harrier at 160 Wh/km on a membership tariff. EV Grids shows indicative session cost on each stop card after you plan. The formula (highway, not home)

Energy (kWh) ≈ distance (km) × Wh/km ÷ 1000. Charging cost ≈ energy × ₹/kWh. Charging is not 100% efficient — you pay for what the station meters, which is a little more than what landed in the pack. For planning, the simple product is enough. For accounting, keep the operator invoice.

Example: 570 km × 165 Wh/km = 94 kWh. At ₹22/kWh that is about ₹2,070 for the road energy — typically split across one or two DC sessions plus whatever you already had in the battery. If you started at 90% on a 45 kWh pack (~40 kWh on board), you still buy the remainder on the highway. The planner’s stop costs are the highway purchases, not the home charge that filled the car last night.

What tariff to type in

Public DC in India commonly sits in the mid-teens to low thirties ₹/kWh. Memberships (Tata Power, Jio-BP, Statiq, and others) can beat the walk-up rate. Some plaza guns are expensive enough that a 8 km detour to a cheaper hub is worth it — that is what Prefer lower-cost and a max ₹/kWh cap are for. Home / office AC (₹6–12/kWh in many cities, depending on slab) is the reason monthly EV running cost looks excellent on the EV vs petrol savings calculator. Do not use home tariff to price a highway day.

Time is also money

A “cheap” 30 kW gun that adds 90 minutes can cost more than a ₹4/kWh premium at 150 kW if you are paying for a hotel night you would otherwise skip. Fastest trip mode weights power more heavily. Cheapest mode weights tariff. Balanced is the default for a reason.

Petrol comparison on the same road

A 14 km/l petrol SUV at ₹105/l spends about ₹7.5/km. An EV at 165 Wh/km and ₹22/kWh spends about ₹3.6/km on that energy. The gap shrinks if you only use expensive DC and never charge at home. It widens on monthly commuting. Use this page for one corridor; use /savings for ownership payback including RTO in selected cities.

How to get a better number from the planner

Plan the real origin and destination with your vehicle preset. Read cost on each stop — not just the total. Swap a backup if a primary is a known expensive mall charger. Share the trip so co-drivers see the same estimate. Then still verify the tariff on the operator app when you plug in. EV Grids does not bill you and does not receive a live nationwide price API from every CPO.

Public DC often lands roughly ₹16–32/kWh depending on operator, state, and membership. Plaza and mall rates can sit higher. Home AC charging is much cheaper and should not be mixed into a highway session estimate.
