Family EV road trips in India — kids, stops, and sane SOC

A family EV trip is a logistics problem with snacks. You want chargers with toilets and food, not the theoretically optimal kW in a dusty lot. EV Grids amenity and lodging signals exist for this.

Plan stops as breaks, not as failures

With children, a 35-minute CCS2 session next to food is a feature. Chasing a zero-stop 500 km run so you can say you did it is how everyone arrives miserable and at 11% SOC. Choose Balanced or even more stops, not Fewest, unless the kids are asleep and the guns are fast.

Filter mentally for ‘can we walk to a bathroom’. Ranked amenities on stop cards help; your own knowledge of a plaza helps more.

Leave earlier than the petrol version

Queues plus a slow session will happen once. Starting at 6 a.m. turns that into a story. Starting at 11 a.m. turns it into a night arrival. Keep 20%+ reserve so a failed gun does not become a family emergency.

Two drivers, one itinerary

Share the EV Grids trip so both phones have the same waypoints. The person not driving should run the operator app before you park. PDF or WhatsApp copy for grandparents who still want a list of names.

Car choice is honesty

Three-row EVs (EV9 class) and large SUVs change Wh/km with a full cabin. Enter a worse efficiency than the two-up preset. Vehicle pages on EV Grids are for that conversation — not for winning an ARAI screenshot argument.

Snacks live at the charger

Tell kids the stop is lunch, not a failure. That single social trick prevents the driver from skipping a needed session to ‘make time’. Time was going to bathrooms anyway.
