NH44 in monsoon — EV planning guide

Monsoon on NH44 means slower traffic, higher HVAC load, and less margin for a dead plaza. This guide explains how to raise reserve and use backups on that corridor.

Before you leave (June–September)

On the highway in rain

Wet roads and standing water increase rolling resistance — expect 5–15% higher Wh/km vs dry runs.

Avoid pushing to the next stop if arrival SOC drops below 30% on the planner — stop earlier on the plains side.

If a stop is unreachable or flooded

Water is a routing problem

Flooded plaza approaches and landslide holds are why monsoon plans need time slack, not just extra SOC. A charger 400 m off the highway can become 8 km via a service road. If a pin looks heroic on the map but sits in a known dip, pick the backup on higher ground.

Wet rolling resistance and wipers/AC add consumption. Recalculate if you sat an hour in a jam. The morning plan is not sacred.

When to postpone

If IMD or local news shows your specific NH44 stretch under a red alert, delaying a non-essential EV trip is the adult move. The planner cannot model a closed carriageway.

What rain actually changes

Three things at once: wet roads raise rolling resistance, traffic slows and lengthens the day, and climate control runs continuously to keep the glass clear. The result is higher consumption per kilometre and a longer time on the road than the same route in February.

This is general guidance rather than a measured multiplier for your car. Enable adjust for conditions so the planner applies its terrain and weather factor, and raise reserve to the 25–30% band rather than trying to predict an exact percentage.

Monsoon-specific charging decisions

Prefer covered charging bays where they exist — plugging in during heavy rain is safe by design but unpleasant, and standing water around a bay is a genuine reason to move on. Approaches to plaza chargers flood before highways do, so a site can be working and still unreachable.

Keep a second option in the same town rather than 60 km further on. In monsoon the failure mode is usually access, not electronics, and a nearby alternative solves access.
