Uttar Pradesh routes are mostly flat with improving expressway DC. The Delhi–Lucknow–Varanasi triangle is a good second trip after a shorter Golden Triangle shakedown.

Delhi → Lucknow

Yamuna Expressway and NH44 approaches give 400+ km with plaza DC — often one stop from 90% SOC for 350 km class packs.

Lucknow onward

Lucknow → Varanasi is a shorter NH31 leg — good for testing real Wh/km before longer Central India runs.

Kanpur → Lucknow is an easy same-day hop to verify your settings before Delhi legs.

Planning tips

Summer heat (May–June) increases AC load — add 5% buffer to reserve SOC. Always select backups at toll plazas on long weekends.

Expressway habits

Yamuna Expressway plazas are easy and busy. Multi-gun sites, early departure, and a backup two plazas later beat waiting behind three SUVs at 50 kW. Summer AC on UP plains is not optional — budget it in Wh/km.

Lucknow–Varanasi is the shorter laboratory after Delhi–Lucknow. Use it to see if your efficiency number was honest before you plan something longer into MP.

Old-city arrivals

Varanasi and Lucknow old cores are bad places to hunt DC at 8% SOC. Charge on the bypass or at a mall, then enter. Destination AC at a hotel is the civilised end of a pilgrimage day.

Planning around expressway charging

Uttar Pradesh's expressways changed EV planning in the region: access is controlled, average speeds are higher, and charging concentrates at a limited number of service areas. Higher cruising speed means higher consumption per kilometre than the same distance on an older national highway.

The controlled-access design is the catch. If you pass a service area low, the next opportunity may be a long way ahead with no option to exit and find an alternative. Charge at the plaza you reach with a comfortable margin rather than the one you hope exists.

City legs versus intercity legs

Within Lucknow, Kanpur and the surrounding towns, most driving is well within a single charge and home or workplace AC charging covers it. The planning problem appears only on the intercity legs, where distance and speed combine.

For those legs, set start state of charge honestly rather than optimistically. A daily commute habit of leaving at 60% works in the city and fails on an expressway run.
