Choosing an EV for the Delhi to Chandigarh commute

How far is the drive?

Delhi to Chandigarh is roughly 250 km each way on NH44 — about 4–5 hours with traffic. Many EVs with 350–450 km ARAI range can do the leg with zero or one DC stop if you start at 90% SOC and keep a 20% reserve.

Summer AC and Murthal/Karnal congestion can add consumption — enable adjust for conditions in EV Grids when planning.

Which EVs work for regular commuters?

Long-range SUVs (Tata Harrier EV, Curvv EV, Mahindra BE 9s, Ioniq 5, BYD Atto 3) often need no stop or a short top-up near mid-route.

Nexon EV Max, MG ZS EV Long Range, and Punch EV typically plan one DC session on NH44. Tiago EV and shorter-range hatchbacks should plan one definite stop each way.

Where to charge on NH44

Murthal, Karnal, and Ambala service areas are common break points. Pick stations with multiple CCS2 guns — single 50 kW plazas queue on weekends.

Commute vs one-off

A weekly Delhi–Chandigarh driver should care about home charging at both ends more than about a heroic zero-stop run. If either house lacks a reliable AC point, you will live on NH44 DC and your ₹/km will look less pretty.

Practical NH44 rhythm

Leave early, treat Ambala/Karnal as the optional top-up, keep a backup, and do not sit on a DC gun past the SOC you need for the last 80 km. Return traffic is its own plan — round-trip mode exists for a reason.

Daily versus weekly changes the answer

A one-way commute driven daily is a different requirement from the same route driven once a week. Daily driving rewards a car you can charge at home overnight and never think about; weekly driving rewards range, because you are more likely to arrive, park, and return without a convenient charge in between.

Decide which pattern you actually have before comparing models. The frequent-commute case usually favours efficiency and home charging over pack size.

What the corridor demands

At roughly 250 km, this route is within a single charge for many mid-size presets and needs one stop for smaller ones. That makes it an unusually forgiving corridor: charging exists near the midpoint, and the failure mode is a queue rather than a gap.

Plan the return leg separately. You will not necessarily arrive at a full charge, weather may have changed, and yesterday's real consumption is better data than this morning's assumption.
